MEMORY Park needs to grow to accommodate the rising popularity of Anzac Day.
Penrith RSL has devised a bold plan to completely change the look and shape of the Penrith High St park, but they need the public's help to bring it to fruition.
The club has raised $150,000 towards the memorial which will cost a total of $370,000 and they are hoping the community, and the Federal Government, will provide the rest.
"On Anzac Day, people can't see what's going on, the memorial is too small," Penrith RSL sub-branch president Laurie Tucker said. "Children can't see anything.
"The new layout will assist the RSL to better position the marchers, cadets and military units so they can be more involved and part of each service."
The new park would be elevated, with a large sandstone memorial designed by Terrance Plowright Studios at the Union Lane end.
The eternal flame would burn within this wall which would contain bronze statues.
The large canary date palms would be removed, as well as the roses and benches.
* To Page 2They would be replaced by a sandstone wall which would serve as a seat, and also a funnel to direct the eye to the memorial.
The redesign would provide more space for attendees at Anzac Day and a more pleasant envionment for regular users, Mr Tucker said.
"Without those trees, there would be less pigeons around," Mr Tucker said.
Penrith Council has already agreed to do the work.
Construction is due to start in July, which would see the park closed for several months.
Mr Tucker is planning a large fundraising dinner at the RSL in the meantime.
"As soon as Anzac Day is over we will start organising it I really hope the community will get behind it.
"Otherwise the RSL will have to borrow cash cash that should be used for veteran's welfare."
Mr Tucker hopes the wall can be opened on Beersheba Day (October 31) by NSW Governor Professor Marie Bashir.
"It will be a magnificent structure ... it has to happen," Mr Tucker said.
* A continuous video display containing testimony from veterans from all wars will be launched on Anzac Day in the RSL. It will be a permanent display in the club.
