Centre's more user-friendly

THE more than 300 users of Penrith Council's North St Marys Neighbourhood Centre can carry on their activities in greater comfort, thanks to an upgrade.
Penrith Mayor Greg Davies said the physical improvements to the building and surrounding grounds have made the centre more comfortable and usable.
"Users now have fantastic new play equipment, airconditioners, trees, pergola and a shade structure over the playground," Cr Davies said.
"The playground is attracting residents who pass the centre on the way to the local shops making the centre a truly magnetic place in this neighbourhood," he said.
The playground was a partnership project between the council, the Federal Government, GROW, St Marys Rugby League Club, St Marys RSL, St Marys Band Club and Panthers. Lindsay Federal Labor MP David Bradbury said centre users would "no longer be sweltering in the heat" following the $40,000 grant from the Government.
"The heat management project means more community groups and services will be able to use the neighbourhood centre in the warmer months," Cr Bradbury said.
"This is the only community centre within the area and plays an important role in bringing people together for community programs and events.
Cr Davies said: "Council produced a heat management manual for staff and users, which outlines various steps that can be used to keep the building cool with less reliance on airconditioning, keeping costs down and helping to save the environment.
"Since the centre opened in August 2005, it has become one of the busiest neighbourhood centres in the city, being used by more than 300 people each week for a range of activities from exercise classes to church meetings.
"The centre is a safe and now more user-friendly place for people to meet, learn, and have fun."
