Blooming good weekend
Friday 18 April, 2008 9:00am
WHAT better way to spend a day out than to be surrounded by magnificent flowers while having a great time?
The Chrysanthemum Society of NSW is holding its 51st Chrysanthemum Championship Exhibition on April 26-27.
Society secretary Tony Biddulph said the competition would be of the highest calibre.
"We will have some of the best flowers in Australia on show," he said.
"We're hoping for a good turnout. We usually get 300 to 400 people come through but it all depends on what else is going on that day.
"The drought's finally broken and we've had some nice weather so we're hoping for some nice flowers."
Mr Biddulph said there would be much more than flowers to see over the weekend.
"We do have other things like the Porcelain Artists' exhibition and stalls by the Ikebana Society, the St Marys Historical Society and devonshire tea for sale," he said. "Our own society will have a craft stall selling baby clothes and all the general crafts people would expect."
All prize-winning flowers will be auctioned off after the show.
"It's a nice chance for people to pick up some great flowers for just a few dollars," he said.
"With Mother's Day coming up you can easily maintain them and give them as a gift."
Mr Biddulph said the exhibition was one way the society tried to get people involved with growing.
"We trying to encourage this as a hobby," he said. "This show costs us an arm and a leg to put on and even if you win some prizemoney you don't come out on top.
"We do this to encourage novices to come and enjoy themselves and to keep it going as a hobby."
The show is on Saturday, April 26 from 10am-6pm; Sunday, April 27 from 9am with trophies and awards 1.30pm and flower auction about 3pm. It's at the Senior Citizens Hall, cnr Great Western Highway and Mamre Rd, St Marys. Details: Tony on 9623 9724.
