Bears come roaring back
Tuesday 25 March, 2008 12:00am
THE Penrith Bears have a strong chance of making it back to back National Australian Hockey League titles this year, after they took out the Wilson Cup (pre-season series) two weeks ago.
For the second year running the Bears were crowned series champions.
The Wilson Cup often provides a clear indication of the teams to watch out for in the season ahead and as the reigning Wilson and Goodall Cup champions, the Bears will be tough to beat.
The final was a brutal encounter that went right down to the wire.
The Bears met a determined West Sydney Ice Dogs outfit that refused to lay down, but the Bears hung on to win the match 6-4.
Robert Franchini, Murray Wand, Vlad Rubes, Paul Shumak and Michael Schlamp all added to the Bears tally.
The first game at the Penrith Ice Palace will be against the Central Coast Rhinos on Saturday, April 19 at 5:30pm. Check out www.bears www.bearsden.com.au
In other ice hockey news, four Bears players will represent Australia in the 2008 Division II World Championships to be held in Newcastle from April 7-13.
They are Murray Wand, Tyler Lovering, Vladimir Rubes, Adrian Esposito.
