Emus can't get across the gap
16May06
THE gap between semi-professional and amateur rugby players was evident on Saturday when Sydney University swept aside the Emus.
Final scores were 52-7.
The most obvious example of this gap was in the midfield where a current member of the Waratahs squad partnered a past Waratah and current Australian Sevens player in the Uni centres and created havoc through the Penrith backline, which was missing midfield general Bernie Orbell.
To add to the Emus' woes, by the 20-minute mark, both regular locks were on the sideline so Uni were able to dominate the lineouts and possession in general.
It took Uni 64 minutes to score four tries, but then they piled on four more in the last 16 minutes.
Mention must be made of Luke Starr, who was nominated as Players' Player by both teams, for his courageous display in making 20 tackles a remarkable effort for a halfback.
Greg Deery scored the Emus' lone try which was converted by Iain Cowan.
